Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in the North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program. The following will give you some information about what courses we are offering and requirements.

How do I register for the safety program?
Complete the registration form and print the waiver form. Sign the waiver form, and bring it with you the first day of class. If you are under 18 years of age, you must obtain a parent's signature. If parent's signature is not on waiver, you will not be able to attend the class and you forfeit your registration fee.

How old do I need to be to take the course?
All participants must be at least 14 years of age at the time of class and have parental signature. For the students in the 14-16 year old age group, NDDOT specifies that they cannot take a motorcycle permit test without having participated in the Motorcycle Safety course.

How do I register more than one person, although I only have one email address?
You can submit multiple registrations from one account. Create a new account and then go through the class registration process twice, once for each person registering. During the checkout process, you will be prompted to confirm the student’s name and address. This information will auto-populate from your account, but during the second registration, you would change the name to the other person.

What happens if I confirm a date and find that I cannot make this scheduled time?
Once you have scheduled yourself for a class, you are expected to attend. If you do not attend your scheduled training time, you will forfeit your registration fee.

What times are the NDMSP classes held?
In areas that we own our land or have land rented, such as Bismarck, Minot, Fargo and Grand Forks, we will train seven days a week. We train Monday - Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. We also train on weekends. The class times can vary from locations. The mobile location dates and times are subject to student and facility availability.

If you are in a rural area, we train when we have enough student interest and the dates and times are dependant on the student and land availability. We always do our best to accommodate as many students as possible.  We are here to educate and promote safety among our riding community.

How much does the program cost and how long is it?
The Basic Rider Course is approximately 17 hours in length and is $50.00 per student. The Experienced Rider Course is approximately 4.5 hours in length and is $40.00.

OUT OF STATE RESIDENTS:

  • Basic Rider Course $100.00 (NON-REFUNDABLE)
  • Experienced Rider Course $100.00 (NON-REFUNDABLE)

I have a busy schedule, will I lose my payment if I cannot fit the class that I confirmed in my schedule?
Your payment is non-refundable once confirmed a date for the class. Be sure you can attend before committing to a class time. We have a lot of students that want to take the safety program, so we must make sure each class is full.

Can I get my license by taking the safety program?
Once you successfully complete the Basic Rider Safety Course you will be given a completion card from your rider coach and the state may waive your skills test. You must have a valid permit. The completion card is valid for one year from your completion date.

Do I need my permit to take the class?
No, a permit is not required to take the class. You can take the permit test with the state either before or after class. A permit is required to obtain your motorcycle endorsement.

How do I obtain a permit?
Contact the Department of Motor Vehicle to take the written test.

How many people will be in the class?
We try to coordinate a group of at least 8 people with a maximum of 12 for each class. For the range class a minimum 6 students are required before the range skills portion of the class can be completed. Classes will contain all age groups and experience levels. Classes may be subject to cancellation if not filled.

How can I be sure to take the class with my friend, family member or spouse?
Our online registration indicates number of spots open for each class. Make sure when signing up for a class there is enough spots open. Register each person immediately after one another to assure these spots.

Where do you train the North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program?
Our regular training sites are: Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, and Minot. We do offer mobile programs to other areas such as Bowman, Hazen, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Jamestown, and Williston.

What if it is raining on the day of the course?
All classes are subject to change due to inclement weather. The decision to cancel is that of the instructor. (due to inclement weather such as snow, heavy rains, lightning or extremely high winds) Please provide phone numbers on the register form so that we may contact you. If you are not contacted, we expect you to attend the scheduled time. If you are not in attendance, you will forfeit your registration fee.
